Hooks for Yellowtail Snapper, Mutton Snappers, Groupers, Dolphin and Wahoo Trolling

If you plan on reef fishing in the Florida Keys it is always best to order hooks prior to arriving in the Florida Keys. You do not want to waste time going to the tackle shops unless you have to get bait at the last minute.  

Snapper

I use all the jigs and hooks listed below. Personally I prefer using 1/8 yellowtail snapper jigs either pink or yellow in color.  For hooks I use size 3 or 4, just depends on how the fish are eating.  For patch reef fishing you will need to use larger 1/2 oz and 1 oz jigs heads tipped with cut bait(ballyhoo chunks) or shrimp. 

Grouper Fishing   

When I am grouper fishing with dead bait, I use size 8 or 9 Wide Gap Mustad hook.

Wahoo and Dolphin Trolling

I have been using the Mustad 3407 hooks for years. When I am targeting large dolphin using bigger ballyhoo I use size 9 and when using smaller dink ballyhoo I used Size 8. I make my own double hook rigs for ballyhoo and baitstrip trolling for using Size 8 Mustad 3407. 

Tip: It is always best to have some heavier jigs available just in case the tide is non-existent or moving quickly. Also try to get away with using the largest hook you can with a wide gap. If you are not getting the bites, then start scaling down. 

Live Bait Hooks

Pilchards I use size 4 or 5.

Ballyhoo I prefer using larger size hooks. Size 6 or 7

It is always best to match the size of the hook to the size of the bait you are using. You do not want to hinder the action of the live bait by using to large of a hook.
